Mendy Ganchrow, M.D. - Mission Statement

Return to my blog pages

January 1, 2005

My friend and colleague Dr. Michael Kram suggested to me that I join the growing list of bloggers. This weeks Fortune magazine has a cover story on the growing importance of bloggers.

Two weeks ago I had the pleasure of serving as Scholar-in-residence at the Beth Israel synagogue in Omaha Nebraska and being hosted by Rabbi Jonathan Gross, a wonderful young rav, who has just completed an internship at Beth Jacob in L.A. under the mentorship of my friend Rabbi Steven Weil. Many of his mentor’s practices and style have rubbed off on Rabbi Gross. A number of his congregants who recall my regular columns in JEWISH ACTION encouraged me to go the “blog route.”

Incidentally, with a new synagogue, mikveh, day school complex, and low housing costs make OMAHA an attractive community for young couples. I suggested to the leadership that they approach the two university medical centers about creating a shomer Shabbat residency program.

With the encouragement of my brother-in-law, Kal Hartstein, a blogging aficionado, I decided to give it a try. And so with the technical support of my webmaster, Steve ---here goes.

I have no interest in rumors, scandals or attacks on individuals. I intend to concentrate on commenting on serious issues, which in light of my long involvement in public policy can engender a unique point of view. In general, my Jewish Action articles and my many op-eds have generated both controversy and intelligent discussion. A number of these are reprinted at the conclusion of my autobiography.

My plan is to crawl before I walk or run. Therefore, I will start with a weekly contribution, hopefully a major op-ed type essay and some poignant comments on other issues.

I look forward to your comments and critiques. In future weeks I plan to cover such topics as disengagement, the cost of drugs, and the Bush judicial nominees.
